Where to shoot family photos around Winston-Salem
I don't believe in one location for every family. The right spot depends on your kids' ages, your style, and what feels like you. A few of my go-to areas: Downtown Winston-Salem for brick, string lights, and a walkable urban feel. Hanging Rock and the Sauratown Mountains, about 30 minutes north, for real outdoor texture (fall here is unmatched). Dogwood Farms and similar Triad farm properties for that soft, golden-field look with room for toddlers to run. And your own backyard or neighborhood, which is underrated; if your kids are more comfortable at home, that comfort shows up in the photos. I'll ask a few questions before we ever pick a spot: how old are the kids, what's your family like on a normal Saturday, do you want something to frame over the mantel or something that feels more like a memory. The location follows the answer.
What a session actually looks like
A mini session runs 30 minutes at one location, built for families who want great images without a big production. A full session runs a full hour and can cover up to two looks or locations. Either way, I'm not lining everyone up and counting to three for 45 minutes. I shoot the real moments, the sibling who won't stop laughing, the grandparent getting swarmed, the two seconds where everyone actually looks like themselves.

Why I do this the way I do
Before I picked up a camera full time, I spent five years as a North Carolina State Trooper and eight years in the Army National Guard. Both taught me to read people fast and notice the real moment instead of the posed one. I'm not trying to manufacture a smile, I'm trying to catch the one that was already there.
